The Antwerp Indian Association was formed in 1979. The  AIA  is a registered non-profit making organization.

The first members of the Association were diamond traders. Since 1979, the AIA has grown to include 510 members from various walks of life. The membership of the AIA is open to all Indian (Indian origin) residents of Antwerp.

The AIA is run by an elected body: The Board of Directors. Members to the Board are elected every 3 years.

The AIA was formed to retain ties with India, the motherland. Cultural traditions are kept intact through the enthusiastic celebration of festivals. This cultural unity has helped to bring the community members closer to one another. Moreover, it is through the rich and varied cultural traditions and celebrations that awareness is spread amongst the children and future generations about Indian culture.

Various events and activities bring the local Indian community together. The AIA organizes the following activities on an annual or biannual basis.
