South African Club

The History of the South African Club

The South African Club was started in 1994, and registered as a foundation. The objective was, and still is, to bring South Africans and people interested in South Africa together during various events which are organized by the SA Club committee. The Club was established as a non-political, non-racial, and non-profit organization. Everyone with an interest in South Africa and its culture is welcome to participate in the various events.

The SA Club acts as a meeting point for South African which have either recently arrived in The Netherlands, and also for those that have been here for quite sometime already.

The events over the past years consisted of the (famous) South African Club braai’s; cheese & wine evenings; pub nights; events surrounding the Rugby World Cup(s); events surrounding visiting SA cricket teams; boat trips; camping weekends; etc, etc.

When the SA Club was started, the committee produced a bi-monthly Bulletin, which contained lots of news relevant to South Africans living in The Netherlands. Later, a website was launched, and there was no need to produce the (very time-consuming) Bulletin. It also meant that it was no longer necessary to charge a membership fee.  

The membership consists of persons from various backgrounds, ages; and interests. We see that the events organized determine who participates, for example, the SA Club braai’s are quite broad-based, and as a result, all ages are present. Pub nights typically attract a younger crowd.
